The heat shield rattle like a SOB. Has any one pulled them off completely? I was a little concerned about doing it since the front cat is so close to my t-case. I really don't want to get into welding them back on so I am open to any other ideas.

The heat shields from both Cats have been removed on our 1992 XLT for at least 2 years.. (close to 100k miles).. no problems.. the only thing you have to be careful of (and you shoudl be careful about this anyway) is if you park over dry grass, you can start a fire..

I would recomend welding them back on. The reason why is the heat will cook the tranny fluid. They may not keep all the heat away from the tranny cooler lines, but they help, and everything you can do to keep the tranny fluid cooler will make it last that much longer.

Just FYI

Yet another reason to keep a fire extinguisher in your vehicle.
