my 98 explorer 4.0 has a flashing CEL and it feels like if it was misfiring. Today after I used it I took a look at the converters closest to the engine and the right side one was red hot the left was ok. Could this be a clogged converter and the cause of the CEL. Any imput would help.

TNX. :banghead:

if it was glowing red converter I'd have to say is probably a clogged converter

What was the trouble code that illuminated the CEL?

This just happened so I havent had the computer read.

I would get the code before I did anything else.

last weekend my 2000 4.0 did the same thing where it was mis firing but my emission control filter melted and shorted out some spark plug wires.. I was thinking possibly my CC was messed up as well.

Its actually rare for a converter to just fail. Its more likely that the engine miss caused the converter to overheat. If the miss is due to a lean condition it will cause excessive heat to build in the conveter causing it to overheat. After saying that, it is possible that the conerter is currently damaged due to overheating. So before you replace the converter (providing it is damaged) you need to make sure that there isn't any other problems that caused the converter failure in the first place.
