Nope, both a '97 Sport, w/ SOHC, that I had, had only 2, as well as my '99 4dr SOHC. ...and yes, I'm sure they were both factory.

I agree. The SOHC engines should have 4 cats. Im not sure which year it was when they started putting 6 on there but I believe yours should have 4. The OHV engine like mine has 2..

my factory 99 only 2 and it was a 4.0 SOHC

ok, well disregard then cause i only have a OHV and I was speaking from seeing other ones. I thought the 2000's had 4. I know that I was under a 2002 ranger with the SOHC and it had 6..

4 maybe, but I doubt it had 6 cats. 2 of what you thought were cats were, most likely, resonators.

Alright, so that picture that explorinitup made does show that the SOHC has a true dual set up going all the way to the muffler which is a dual in a single out. I KNOW that's right. As for the 2 or 4 cats, i can't say for sure on a 2000 but I thought that since 96 ford always put 2 cats in a row. For example, I've seen a grand marquis with 2 cats on each bank of cylinders plus a resonator on each side with a dual configuration, but the resonator was right before the exhaust exited the tail pipe. Now on a mustang GT that was a 96 I've seen 3 cats per bank of cylinders. When I say there are 6 total cats, 2 of those are called pre-cats so that they heat up faster and meet emisions faster.

So, idk why you say that the newer ranger can't have 6 total cats.

I don't know. But i do know, for a fact, because I saw it with my own eyes:

...and apparently he does/did too.
my factory 99 only 2 and it was a 4.0 SOHC

Best thing to do is just crawl under your own vehicle and look, if you need to know what's there, as there seems to be a variety of configurations.

im tellin ya it has 2

2000 was the change over year for the exhaust system, I believe it was 12/99 and newer had more then two CATS and 11/8/99 and older had only two CATS.

If I recall my 2001 had 4 attached to the Y pipe right of the manifolds (two on each side) and then 2 on the pipe that attaches the y pipe to the rest of the exhaust

Hey every one thanks for the help... I crawled under my car two day and it only has 2 cats it was built in 99. If any car company builds a car that needs 6 cats it should be scrapped! WEH87 sorry

That must only apply to the OHV before 1999...My 1999 Explorer with an OHV engine has four convertors; one each in the down pipes from each exhaust manifolds and then 2 convertors in series in the single exhaust setup before the muffler...The following pics are what the exhaust on the 1999 Explorer with the OHV engine look like...
