Yeah, that's not a picture for the 97 5L. The 5L has a left and right front cat, and behind them is the rear dual cat which is like two cats connected together at the back in a Y (count that as one or two as you wish).
That's the info that I found for the '97 that OP has.
My '01 has indeed four cat converters, but only the first pair is monitored with O2 sensors.
And there is another exhaust body past that, don't think is a cat.

that looks right for the back cats. there also is 4 02 sensors. the rear sensors are on top of the pipes along side of the trans
this is the front part.
its hard to see both of them. they are stacked one on top of the other.
the front 02 sensors are mounted before the cats. the rear sensors are mounted between the front and rear cats.....or is that what your trying to say. i know a few people (myself included) have a programer in their truck, and have the rear sensors shut off.

The rear cats aren't monitored by the o2 sensors because they are upstream of them. There is no need to disable the rear sensors if you remove the rear cats.
As for the OP, IIRC my 97 had 4 cats just like my 98 and 01.
