Hi all, Im unfamiliar if any of the catbacks for the 3rd gen Xs are any good.

After putting on the 265/75/16s, I have lost a bit of the low end (with 3:73 gearing) seems to hunt more now, and wondered if any of the catbacks will help this and my mileage w/o changing to a 3:92 or 4:10 ratio

Ive seen the Gibson ,Magnaflow and Mac Products for the 3rd gen, but they all BS with their results.

So Im looking for real world info from folks on here who have them before I waste any hard earned money on a system. Id rather not do custom since they always seem to be hacked together.

Doug

The only way you're going to get that low end back is from gears (or a supercharger if you're so bold...). In addition, most don't realize any mpg gains with a catback due to the fact that most tend to drive a little harder so as to hear the catback. I don't think most people here are running true cat-back systems either. Seems the majority are getting new mufflers welded in with a tip or something. Stock pipe remains. As far as "hacking" pipe together... just take it to a GOOD shop. I've been getting custom exhaust work done for over 10 years at a local muffler shop, and never once has anything looked hacked together.

it's not that we don't run true cat backs, most are just custom. But you really shouldn't go much bigger then 2.5" pipes anyway.

OP, you have a V8 or V6? And any good exhaust shop won't make a custom cat back look hacked together.

Doug - I see now that you've got a 2WD truck so a gear swap shouldn't cost too much anyway... If you went with the 3.92's you would probably make up your power loss and not take too much of a hit at the pump.

Doug, can i ask why you got bigger tires for a 2wd X ?????

you got more negative affects then positive... atleast in my mind

all the tires do for your X is pure look, other than that your hurting yourself...

( NOT meaning to be negative at all, just curious ??? )

Well the main reason is A) it looks better then little 255's on their B) I photograph alot of offroad races and help pit for a few off road teams. Youd be suprised where this little 2WD X can go with just bigger tires and a limited slip rear end.

The X really isnt the platform I wanted to start with since the suspension sucks, (this was my commuter car)but since I just got laid off today from my job, I dont think I'll be doing anything to it for a while. My kids and family and mortgage come first.

hope that answers your question.. :)

gears or timing ie programmer will be all to really gain you some torque back.

how would he be hurting himslef??? isnt Ben's a 2WD??? or do they make XLS in 4x4/AWD???

not being an ass by the way, its honest curiosity

XLS does come in 4x4, i have a 02 XLS with 255/65/17 and i never noticed any difference in loss of power and mileage loss at all and i drive it hard

I rock an 03 XLS with 4x4... that was one of my top priorities when i bought my X...

I don't rock craw my 2x4 or bog it. but i tow a 2500lb trailer out into the sand through fire roads rutted out wet powerline trails etc all the time. my last 2 lifted trucks have been locked 2x4 its as good for me personally. i had 2 4x4 bronco's on 33's before these trucks and ive gone the exact same places with as much ease.
