A friend (93 XLT) and I both want to install cd changers in our Explorers. We don't want to change from the stock deck (theft from auto is a big problem here), so we thought an aftermarket changer that plays through the FM stereo would be a good choice.

Problem is hiding it. Hopefully something under a seat or such. Does anyone have any suggestions re: make and model, and location to install?

Thanks.

I can only offer a couple of locations that may be possible to mount. I have seen them mounted in the center console, and in the back compartment where the jack is located. I like that location cause the pannel covers it up and you don't loose space in the center console. I don't believe you can mount it under the seat. I know there is no room in my 93 sport.

I don't have a console. I have the 60/40 bench seat. My buddy does have the console.

What would I have to remove from the jack storage area to fit it?

They removed the jack and fabricated a bracket that would hold the disk changer. The changer was pretty compact. I don't know if a big one would fit. take a look and see if it will work. Since you have the bench seat it should mount under the seat. If you really want to get creative mount it in the glovebox. but that takes alot of fbricating.

some companies also make a md changer these i have seen will fit in the glovebox. i think some also have an fm modulator that allows it to play through a radio station on the low side of the band

Not interested in an MD player. Gotta love it when you can burn your own music cd's.

I'd prefer not to lose the jack too. There is no space under the area between the front seats.

I was hoping there was something that would fit under the rear seats or under the drivers seat.

I don't know what else to tell ya. Do you already have the changer?

nope, don't have the changer yet. Was hoping someone could suggest something small.

How much were you looking to spend? How many discs 6, 12 or 24? The 6 would be the smallest. Do you preffer a certain brand? My brother is the manager for a Sound shop and I will talk to him tomarrow and I will ask him what is the smallest changer there is. What type of vehicle?

For what it is worth, I just put in a Sony 10 disk in my daughter's car around xmas time. It was just short of $200, the price could have come down. Snap to put in and sounds great! How many disks do you need? Too many and its back and forth with them from the house to the car.
I heard the wireless can sometimes be a problem and ARE more pricey. I told my daughter the wireless contol was just another thing to loose. Anyway, I think most wireless come with a wired controller.

Think about a cover for it. I couldn't find one so I made one out of felt. Better to breath out moisture. Also, since I put in it in vertically, I was sure gravity would help "unneeded thingies" get in through the top opening. Do you think my daughter would ever keep it closed?

The height? - 2 ins laying flat?, i think there are many possiblities.
The jack location under the flap seems a good one.
I'm following the discussion cause I was thinking where the best place is to put one in my 97.... still working on it but listening

haven't really set a $ limit yet, although like most people I prefer not to pay a great deal. I'm in my 40's so I no longer need the loudest/best one money can buy 8^)

Number of cd's it holds isn't really that important. I can burn my own cd's and eliminate the songs I don't want.

Wired remote is fine. I can tuck that under the seat.

Stealth is probably the biggest factor here with money a very close 2nd.
