ive ran my 94 4wd with a scanner and i keep getting code 214, something bout the "cylinder identification circuit fail"

whats this mean and how can i fix/find the solution?

the CEL comes on when warmed up but goes off and on when driving, usually off when applying power but comes on again when coasting.

thanks for any help or ideas in fixing this.
BTW it runs great so im hoping this is something simple!

come on guys i really need some help on this one..its bugging me

Jerry, I saw this post last night, and was hoping someone would answer, because I was curious. I've looked through my FSM and Haynes, and can find nothing related to "cylinder identification circuit".

My guess is that the trouble is in the ignition control module, which is located on the passenger side radiator support. The fact that the CEL goes off and on under accell and coast, indicates timing is involved. The ICM controls timing with inputs from the PCM and sensors. The only other thing I can think of is maybe a maladjusted crank position sensor, which reads tdc from the trigger wheel on the front of the crankshaft. Of course, it could also be a bad PCM, but that would be my last guess.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe someone with experience on this code will answer....

i did a search and found that the code is due to the cam sensor.

only prob now is that a new one is appox. 400 new. now i just need to find a salvage yard that carries one. no one where im located :(

Ah Ha....Cam position sensor, I started to suggest that. :D

Jerry, go to www.fordpartsnetwork.com
They have them for $63.64.

that price must have been for a different year model.

im still trying to find a junk yard that actually has one, anybody know of somewhere?

another option i was thinking of is taking the sensor off and cleaning the magnet i read about on it. does anybody think that would be the problem???

thanks
Jerry

Is it the camshaft position sensor or the crankshaft position sensor? I just found something that says that they didn't use a camshaft position sensor until 96 and later Dead Link Removed

Crankshaft Position Sensors (CKP) are probably a lot cheaper than a CMP.

From fordpartsnetwork.com for a 1994 Explorer
__
List $76.67
Net $63.64
Electrical, Powertrain Control, Crankshaft Position Sensor, Explorer

I reviewed this and I think your problem could be one of the following:

Wiring issue (check wiring between CKP, ICM and PCM) see below to figure out acronyms

Crankshaft position sensor

Ignition Control Module

Powertrain Control Module

I think this link may help:
Dead Link Removed

thx :)

i will check the rest of the wiring ASAP, i tried today and also tried to figure off how to get the cam sensor off, but i m having trouble locating it. i know its on the rear of the block but where?
the haynes manual doesnt clearly state where it is on the rear of the block. i wanted to look at it and remove it to see if something was wrong wit it. also how many bolts hold it on?

sorry for all the questions and thanks for the help
Jerry

I think that you are having trouble finding it because they didn't start using them until 96 (when they switched from EEC-IV to EEC-V).

My truck has one, it is located at the rear of the block, where the distributor would be if it had one. It is easier to see it from the passenger side.

????

now im lost, when i did a search and came up with the cam sensor being my problem for code 214, it was on a 1994!

otherwise what would cylinder identification circuit failure be? i am on vacation right now and dont have tools with me to fix it.

i called the dealership and they do make them for a 1994 but the cam sensor is $375 cause the sequential driving unit is part of it.

it runs fine cause i gather that if the ignition system detects a fault then it sets the timing at 10 degrees from what i understand.

someone has got to be able to shed some light on this.

i have developed another problem with my X....i made a sharp turn, heard a POP and then the steering was all weird, turned it allt he way in the other direction (right) and it popped back, seemed fine, but then i had a bad wobble a few miles down the road, when i stopped and got back on the gas it was fine and hasnt happened since? aahhhh this thing is driving me nuts. had it for one week now LOL.
