CEL turn off by itself?

Hi all,
My check engine came on last night so I got the code pulled this morning and replaced the respective 02 sensor this afternoon. Will the light go off by itself after a little bit of driving or do I have to go back to autozone and get them to clear it out? It's a 96 ex..

it depends... on my truck the light went out after about 10 minutes, but it doesnt always happen that way...

The OBD-II system as far as I know, will keep the CEL on until the computer can determine that the malfunction no longer exists. Normally it is 3 approximately 10 minute, mixed city/highway drives. (1996-present)

With the old OBD-I system, at least with my experience, the CEL will go out immediately after the problem is resolved. (I think it was 1982-1995)

that is correct.
If there is no problem, there is no light.

Some times conditions teeter on the very edge and you can have an intermitient light.

Just because the code referred to an O2 sensor, it doesn't mean the O2 sensor was bad. You may have replaced a functioning unit while not addressing the actual problem that was causing the sensor to throw a code. You can reset the computer yourself by disconnecting your battery for a short time. If the light comes back on, you've got more fixing to do.

Just in case anyone was wondering.. it took about 80 miles of driving and about 20 trips before the CEL finally turned off.

It would depend on the code. You didn't list it in your initial post. Some people get codes for sensors reading rich or lean, and just replace the O2 sensor. That's what my post was referring to...
