1991 2 door explorer
Hi. I got a 1991 Explorer with the center consoul armrest. The armrest is broke at the plastic tower that supports the hinge.

I went to my local wrecker and found several armrests with good hinge towers, however all the upolstery was torn, worn, wrong color even chewed up, all junky.

What I;d like to do is swap my pristine upolstery pad onto the junk yard hinge/tower assembly. I just cant figure how the upolstery is attached and how to remove it without damaging it.

any suggestions??
thanks!

The edges of the cover are glued into a channel around the hinge on the underside. If you use a thin bladded driver you can work it out and then peel the cover back and off. Then just reglue yours when you put it back on. I'm in the middle of recovering mine. Hope this helps.

The OEM brackets were originally just plastic and would crack/break over time. The arm rest bracket was redesigned and is NOW heavy duty steel inside (see pic below).. They used to be on Ebay all the time...

Also check out the Arm Rest thread for more info and pics.
