Central locking problems

Hi there,

I have the same problem in my '99 ex.
I can unlock with the remote as normal, but i can't lock with the remote or with any other switch (can't lock with cargo area switch either).
The remote system seems to work as the red lock light starts to light up when i press the lock button on the remote.

The alarm doesn't seem to work either...

Also when i open the the driver side door the interior lights won't go on (don't know if this has anything to do with the locking problem?).

most likely it's the same problem as with all the other explorer's

if you are unable to lock the doors, there's a grounding cable just behind the rear seats, under the mat, this cable had come loose and therefore it didn't lock the doors
really annoying when you have to walk around the car to lock all the doors...

good luck in the hunt for a loose cable

yours

yes it was tha same solution for me too, but i had to pay the workshop for 9!!! Hours to find the problem, i payed more than $1000 to get the damn locks to work again

now i have sold that stupid car and i will never again buy another american car again

!!! Unhappy ford owner

Sounds to me like a shop that just threw parts at it instead of following the specific diagnostic procedure for the problem. They don't make up the service diagnostic procedures for nothing... They're a specific set of directions that any dealership tech SHOULD be following for any needed repair.

Hi all

Thanks for the info. I have a 98 Explorer that had issues such as those discribed in this thread. After pulling out the back seat and digging out the pink/green wires and removing the shrink rap, all I found was a green powder where the connection should have been. A simple butt crimp was all it took to get it all working again, saving me loads over going to a mechanic.

Thanks again

Hi joekopo,
I had the same problem and with your instruction I resolved the problem.
Thank you very much from Italy.

i cannot get my remote to work, all my doors lock and unlock from the button on the door and not the new remote i bought

You have to program your truck for the new remote, they don't just automatically work. It's very easy assuming the remote is the correct model for your truck. Search for FOB PROGRAMMING.

yep i tried that, apparently i have to look for the Module, i have no idea what that is or what it looks like lol time for some google searching i think

hi i have a similar issue with my 98 XLT some of the doors lock/unlock with both key and button. drivers door does not unlock with either key or button and requires inside operation from the back door to open.
I also have an issue with child lock bar on the rear drivers door not working, I've pulled the door fab off and the bar works fine if manually moved but does not operate from safety lever under the door latch, However there is no room once door fab has been removed to access anything. Any help would be helpful as i'm running out of ideas on how to get into the door cavity short of cutting and re-welding the panel on.
