Ok, I checked TDC today and this is what I found. While turning the motor by hand, my father in law held his finger in the spark plug hole. As the #1 cylinder started up he felt the air pressure. When the notch was roughly 45 degrees from the timing mark, the air pressure stopped, like a valve opened, and then after turning it a little more, the air pressure came back until I lined the notch up. The missing tooth on the sprocket behind the harmonic balancer is positioned at around 7-8 oclock. This really seems to tell me that the motor is out of time somehow. What do you think?

Yet, when I click on the link to your post the above information isn't there! Weird.

I agree though the motor is likely way out of time which would certainly account for the no-start problem. Hopefully somebody else on the forum can give you a more helpful answer than I can.

Just so everyone knows, it is possible to destroy a harmonic balancer. This is the result of removing the one from my 97 Explorer, 1998 5.0 motor with 128000 miles. The other good one came off the motor I replaced three weeks ago. Also, the key on the crank was damaged, so it looks like the crank may be shot. There is a chance that the timing cover can be removed, the timing chain and sprocket pulled, and a new key installed, but I would rather not have to do all that. I'm not going to reinstall the harmonic balancer, until I get in touch with Southern Auto in Darlington, SC and see if they'll honor their warranty.

Good news, at least I know why it wouldn't crank. And it gives me confidence in my troubleshooting skills, as it sounded like a timing issue from the beginning.

Yeah, I remember you mentioning you thought it was a timing issue.

Good work at sorting it out.

It's fixed. Runs great now. Hoping the key on the crankshaft holds up with the other harmonic balancer.

That must have been a great feeling when it fired up :-)
