I have a 98 ford explorer 5.0 awd I just swapped in a used transmision and went to start it and only got a click the arm went out but didn't turn. I had trouble turning the motor to install the torque converter bolts but realized it was in gear so I didn't think anything of it. Now the motor doesn't want to turn. What did I do wrong or did I just get a bad trans?

possibly the torque converter wasn't seated into the front pump gears. now everything is in a bind & you may have broken the pump gears.
.
or on a cheaper note, your battery may be low

J...crappola happens

+1 TC isn't seated properly. do no try to turn it over anymore or you're going to break your pump gears if you didn't already.

Believing an auto trans with engine not running is "in gear" indicates inadequate understanding of the issues involved in aligning and tightening transmission/converter fasteners. An automatic may be in "Park", even, but the input shaft will still turn, allowing alignment of converter studs/holes. How do you suppose an automatic trans. allows the engine to be started if it is in "Park"?

Just my 2 cents. imp
