Changing from 5 spd manual to automatic transmission?

I am interested in installing an automatic transmission in my 92 Explorer Sport. My daughter will get her license this summer and I would feel more comfortable with her driving an automatic. Can anyone give me any advice?

Leave it in! I learned how to drive with my manual tranny Explorer. Anyway back to your question. It should just be a complicated bolt in swap. You would need to find an auto from another Explorer around your year and 4x4. You would need a new steering column with the shifter I am pretty much sure. You would have to get all the linkage for the shifter. You would have to find the gear "indicator" for the instrument pannel. You would have to remove the clutch pedal and other associated pieces. Also you would need to find something to cover the hole in the carpet. I would personally not do it. It will get expensive if you don't do it yourself (even if you do) plus Explorer auto trannys are not that great.

I was looking into crate motors one day and found out that auto's and manuals had different blocks in 4.0L engines. Not a 100% sure of this fact (doen't make since to me) but worth looking into. Just a thought.

I wouldn't swap that manual out!!! The a4ld is a POS!! I know many ranger and exploder owners who have suffered dearly over that auto. I would keep the 5 speed. Better to learn to drive them when your young anyways.

i agree with nightranger, your daughter would be doin alot better if she learned how to drive a stick, it is alot easier to go from driving a stick to driving an auto than the other way around. i really wish my first car was a stick, because i have never been able to drive one well cause all i aver really drive is an auto, plus if she is a teen she will kill the a4ld auto, manuals are alot more durable. once she learns to drive a stick(wont take long) she will remember for life(like riding a bike, you never forget)
