I have a 96Sport 4x4 and thinking of changing the gear ratio for when I install the 33's. My concern is changing the gear ration just in the rear. Will this cause any adverse issues when in 4wheel? I think I have 3.73 now but not sure and thinking I'll need to go to 4.55. I know some of you have already done this but my mind keeps telling me if the ratios are that different then there would be some major binding going on when in 4wheel.?

Keep in mind this is my daily driver and doesn't see a whole lot of off roading other than a field or two........maybe a creek bed.

Correct, there will be major binding (breakage). Swap both the front and rear.

But, I've read here somewhere, where others have done it....but then again they weren't elaborating on the off road capabilities.

I just needed to hear from someone else. Trying to save some money and second guessing leaves a man sleepless. Thanks Robb

If you want to use your 4wheel drive you have to have the same gear ratio front and rear. think about it, It wouldnt work if the front tires turned at a different speed than the rear.

You could make do if you wheel on very loose sand or mud. This lets the wheels turn at different speeds. Not advisable though.

The Explorer 4wd transfer case locks 50/50. This means the driveshafts turn equally. With different diff ratios, the tires turn at different speeds.

He could just use 30s on the front and 33s on the back. :D

You can get away with it on the street, but dont EVER put it in 4wd. Sooner or later, you will have to do the front.
