Hello, a few questions about changing from automatic to manual hubs on a 94 Explorer:

1. How much does the Warn kit cost?

2. What does labor usually run to do this?
(should I try to do them myself?)

Please help, thanks in advance!

I got my kit from warn for $213 + tax. It was easy to do myself. I would say if you can change your oil replace your brakes, things like that you can most likely do it! Once you get into it and get your hands dirty it all comes into play!. I had no idea how to do mine and with the Warn hubs came a nice handy dandy instruction booklet! I love the hubs...never had a problem yet!

You do need to have the right tools (one socket for the removal of the stock spindle nut and one for tightening the new spindle nut)

I got my Warn hubs/conversion kit for $173 including shipping from Clemson 4WD. The prices here are great for Warn parts. Labor cost was about $70 at the local 4x4 shop.

Thanks for the input! I do have to ask though, what special socket tool was required? I have a standard tool set, which likely won't have what I need? Also, I have heard it is a 3 hour grease covered experience, is that about right?

no they should not take you 3 hours, and you ought to be able to control the grease thing. anyway the sockets are readily available at any auto parts store. you will also need one of those strong pen sized pick-up magnets to slide your key out of it's slot, don't worry you will see what i mean when you start. if you are interested in learning what makes these trucks solid and capable offroaders you should really try this yourself, save the $70-80. Hope this helps.

The special tools needed are a four prong socket for the new lock nut, about $15 at your local parts place(I got mine for $12 at PEP Boys), you will need it later to do any service on the front axle/hubs so its a good thing to have. I didnt have the socket for the existing lock nut, but I used my clamping vise grip to get it off -worked great! The vise grip with the big C clamp jaws-used alot to hold things while you work, they are a must have in any tool box.

Took me 2 hours including repacking the bearings
