2000 XLT V8 5.0
Good-morning,

After I came back from a week long vacation I found my car battery dead. I
drive a 2000 Explorer 5.0 XLT. I purchased this from Wal-Mart approximately three weeks ago. I jump started the battery and went on a 20 minute drive and figured it was all charged up. But when I had to go shopping later it was dead again. I tested the volts on the battery when turned off it was 10.5, after it was started it was 14.5. It seems the alternator is doing its job, could this be a bad battery?

Yes, the battery is most likely defective.
Walmart buys batteries by whomever is cheapest and not who makes a quality piece. Bring it back, get your money back and go buy one at an autoparts store or Sears. Get a name brand, something you recognize like Diehard, Interstate, Optima or the like.
By the way, do not use your alternator to recharge a battery, doing so may result in burning up the diodes within the alternator. Then you will need a new one.
When you purchase a new battery, have them charge it to full capacity for you. It may take a few hours, but at least it wont kill your alternator.
Hope this helps
