1996 Exploder
Hi,
i have a stock 96 exploder sport. Sunk more cash into that thing that it would have cost new... you name it, it has been repaired... only thing i can say good is it has yet to leave me stranded, and has always warned me before it breaks.

That being said, i have something funky going on.

When i start the explore it runs fine, voltage is showing 13v seems to be perfect, but if i get it up to 2000 rpm, it drops in voltage to around 5v. (guessing).

It has a newer belt on it, alternator seems ok, battery is a couple of years old, but i dont think a batt would cause it to change voltage and return on idle or under 2000rpm.

I was thinking loose belt, but from what i can tell it seems tight.

I may have to take it to the shop to get this one figured out. I used some belt dressing , thinking maby something got on the alt pulley , but that didnt help.

Anyone encountered this before?

how are you determing the voltage? are you using a volt meter? where are you taking your measurment? at the battery? 13 volts is a bit low. should be 14+. it's not likey you belt is slipping and even if it was, the voltage would only drop to battery voltage. my guess is the problem is in the alternator or voltage reglator. get it tested.

Mine is having issues with the charging system too. It'll charge when you first start it, but the minute you start driving the gauge drops and it quits charging. Guy I bought it from replaced the alternator with one from AutoZone, so there's a 99% chance that it was junk out of the box. I'd take the alternator off and have it tested. If you have an auto-electric shop near you, take it there. Otherwise the parts stores can test it for you (STAY AWAY FROM AUTOZONE!)
