I changed the plugs and wires on my 4.0 ohv today. After I changed them I took it for a ride. It ran great, smooth idle, a little quieter. I parked it and it sat for an hour or two and I restarted it and the check engine light came on and now it won't go off. On the directions on the wires it said to make sure to cross the wires somewhere in the path so they don't crossfire. I didn't do that on my other cars, but I crossed the drivers side bank on the Ex. Could this cause the Check engine light? I took off the air intake tube, but I put all the sensors back on along with the oil fill breather. Any ideas?

I doubt that the spark plug wires are causing the CEL to illuminate.

First and formost, you need to run a scan and determine what trouble code is present,

Good luck.....

You need a scanner to get the codes don't you? I don't think It's like the OBDII like on my old Cutlass.

Yes, you need a scanner to retrieve the trouble code(s).

You have a '96 and that should be OBD II.

Good luck.....

My S10 did the same exact thing and I found out that one of the wires wasn't on the plug all the way. Once I got it back on the check engine light went off. Check your connections at the coil packs and at each plug to make sure they are getting good contact.

I wiggled all the sensors and wires I pulled off and drove for 60 miles and the light just went out by itself.
:D
