Check engine light came on shortly after....

I started my 96 explorer sport during a cold, rainy day. Immediately after starting it, I put it in drive and left. It hesitated some, like it was missing, for about 2 seconds, then ran fine. Belts are all OK. Check engine light will not go off. I really do not want to spend $100.00 if I do not have to. Any thoughts?
