Went to AutoZone and they scanned it for me for free (great store), the 455 is "Evaporative Emissions Control System Leak (Gross Leak)". After searching a bit I think the problem is the gas cap not being on tight enough, I bought a new gas cap that is much more snug ($7) but the light persists...

So my question is this; on 96 Explorers is it up to me to somehow reset the code and turn off the Check Engine light (?) or should it go off in good time, I have driven for and hour or so and still the light remains on.

If I need to reset the code then how do I do this? Disconnecting the battery seems a bit of an overkill but I am more than happy to do that if it is the only way to tirn off the light.

Thanks in Advance!

Gotta disconnect battery.

You do need to disconnect the battery. Leave it iff for about 15 minutes. Then it should be good to go.

Thanks!

I disconnected the battery for about 15 mins last night and the CEL is off and stayed off during my ride in to work (knock on wood!), thanks.

autozone will also reset your computer for free. That happened to me cause the damn gas station people in NJ can't put the cap on right. That pissed me off cause i thought it was a engine prob till i figured out it was a loose gas cap so i took it to autozone to run the code just in case and when it was a 455 i had them reset it and no more light.
