check engine light with power loss

Before you replace the blower resistor unit, clean the contacts on the plug and the receptacle. This past summer after I rebuilt the A/C system I had just high speed (bypassing the resistor assembly). Until then it had been working fine. I cleaned the contacts and it's been fine ever since. It also could be the blower bearings or brushes...

Well what had happened was, the heater was weird when I got it but as long as it wasn't turned off it worked. Last week my gf and I were heading home and she says she hot and asks me to turn the heater off and I told her that if I did that it might not come back on. Well I tried to turn the heater off it stayed on no matter what position I put the fan speed knob in it stayed on. Then I tried again to turn it off and the knob was really stiff and then it let go and the heater went off and now wont come back on so I'm thinking the control knob may be gone or the resistor is gone or maybe both. But i will try cleaning the contacts since its free.

Its still a very good idea to check and when you do, check for debris as well. Common occurrence for fire.

So the heater issue has been solved. Replaced the blower resistor which was not the issue. So went to the junk yard and yanked a heater control panel out of a 91 and put it into mine and now all is well. Need a new connector plug tho as the control panel was drawing so much power that it melted the inside of itself and melted the plug with it. But didn't burn the plug that I could see and the wiring looked ok as well but I'm going to replace the plug anyways just for peace of mind and as a safety precaution to make sure I dont have any issues for a while. Thanks to everyone who helped with all of their advice. Ots really appreciated. Bill

Glad you got it fixed.
It's a pain sometimes to chase these gremlins but so nice when they're nixed!!
