My check fuel cap light has been for a couple weeks and there is nothing wrong with the fuel cap. Why is this on, and how can I get it to turn off? It's bugging the hell out of me. Thanks.

Jeff

Newer cars have gas tanks that are pressurized I believe. My mom's new maxima has an engine light come on because the gas cap wasn't on right. If you are sure it is on right, maybe the sensor is having a problem.

did you ever fill up your tank while the engine was still running? i was warned about this by the dealer.. says that the light comes on..a nd i believe disconnecting the battery for a few mins should take it away.. but not sure

Did you pressure test the cap? If it is good then check for a leak in the evap system or a bad sensor like psychotic said. If it has been on for a week or so then you have a problem.

When my light came on it was because the cap leaked.

If it was due to a fill while running, it will reset after so many start cycles ( the number escapes me ) or use an scanner to reset it.

Good luck.....

Damn, you have a "check fuel cap" light? No one had invented those back in '94....

More than that unfortuntaely...but you're on the right track. I think it's more like 200 tries

i wish i had a fuel cap light....i looked like an idiot one day after i filled up, i was so worried about it printing my receipt i didnt put the cap back on, i just closed the door, then i proceeded to cruise the strip in town....

we thought everyone was waving at us cause they were being nice.....turns out they were waving cause the cap was off!

Yeah, I thought it was like 256 ignition cycles or something random like that. Man, that'd kill a tank of gas to turn it on and off that many times...

Nono, you don't have to ever turn the key to "start", but you still have to turn it to "on" which will just kill the battery;)

If you really have a 2000 model X, you do have a Check Fuel Cap light. I have a 2000 Sport, and I have one. I believe that the 2000 was the first model to have the check fuel cap light. Your's did not come on, because it takes a while for the system to react, before it triggers the light, according to my dealer.
