Check Oil Light

I've owned my '92 for about three years now and have put on about 55K miles on it. The only time the dashboard dummy lights ever came on was when I started the engine, then they'd turn off after a second or two. On a couple of occasions recently, after starting up the engine, i noticed that the check oil light stayed on. The first time, i did check the oil and all was fine. just over the 3K miles and still in the full range. The second time, i just shut the engine down and restarted it after a few moments and the check oil light turned off.

I was just wondering if others have experienced this and it has led to major probs. Any other ideas would be great. I'm thinking about taking it to the garage, but if the light doesn't stay on, will they know what the problem is? sending unit? pump? what else?

Does your truck have an oil pressure gauge? If so, does it show good oil pressure?

Nah, don't even worry about it. Mine does it occasionally as well, usually if I've been parked on an incline (oil drains to the side opposite the sensor and it thinks you're low on oil). As long as it goes out and your oil's fine, it's cool!

If your gauge is reading normal pressure, then I don't think you have anything to worry about.
If the light just stayed on a little longer than usual, that's normal. If you were parked on a hill and the majority of the oil was away from the pickup or it was cold outside, it'll take a second or two to get pressure throughout the system.
If the light stayed on until for a long time and went back off when you restarted the engine, the sensor for it is probably going bad. Though I'm surprised the light and the gauge don't use the same one.

If your rig has alot of miles sometimes the sensor gets covered is slime and will not function properly.

clean the sender

Sounds like the sensor may be sludged up. Next oil change you could pull it and clean it see if it responds better. Its located on the driverside of the oil pan, just about in the middle. The electrical fitting just pulls off, and then unscrew the sender, I used an adjustable wrench when I took mine out. The pans aluminum so dont over tighten when you put it back in.

Mine does the same thing but i think i might be burning/leaking oil because when i check it is low sometimes. I add a bit of oil and it goes off and stays off for a few days. I guess i should have that looked at hunh?
