looks good, post pics when theyre installed.

did you paint or color the needles in any way? it looks really really nice....i hope my 93' gauges are gonna look that good! :bounce:

Will that gauge just plug into the origional spot with out any mods? What years will it fit? Thanx

Looks identical, ill let you know on the install process

That looks awesome. By far the best guage mod I have seen on the site. Let us you know what happens with the odo situation.

Every thing looks good so far, but there might be problems with the odometer. I dont know how to change it, and every ford around here wont help.

i find it hard to believe that no ford dealership will change it for you. i know for a fact that they do it when people put different gauges in - at least around here they do.

jason, on your stock gauges, when you ripped em out, you must have been able to roll the numbers around (i think you said your friend actually did), why not just do that on these? (except dont rip these out ;) )

they dont roll the guages. The dealership will put a sticker in the door jam and on the back of the gauge cluster telling the mileage before the new cluster and the mileage of the new cluster. It is required by law. Since you have a '96, some of the lights on the cluster will be in the wrong spot. The 98+ is different than 95-97.

did you get the gauges pod from your ford dealer? im assuming the 150 you refer to is $150, correct?

Looks good man.:)

Thanks guys. The only problem im experiencing is that my engine temp guage goes way up to the point where the "check guage" light comes on, and my battery light seems a little low. Also my speedometer seems a little off and when doing 60, it feels more like 50. I need to correct this, and this is what they call "calibrate" the needles right? Otherwise it looks really good, and the new ac panel works great! I'm pretty happy right now, and will get some pics once i adjust the needles. But its a pain in the but tearing the cluster in and out 3 times. I scratched up my steering wheel like holder a little bit, but i guess its worth it

What about feeding a frequency in to the odometer gauge or wherever the VSS signal comes in to? Find out the correct amplitude, it should be a matter of feeding in a set frequency and watching the numbers turn.

Another thought: It might be easier to do with the gauge pod installed. Just tap into the wires coming out of your VSS on your transfer case (transmission if 2WD) and put the signal from the frequency generator there. Turn your key on so that power is getting applied to your guages and you should be able to watch the numbers go round and round. Start with a low frequency and work up until you get to a high speed on your speedometer. Don't go so high that you break your speedometer though. It would probably take a while to do it though. If you set your speed to 100 MPH and needed to put 35K miles on it, it would have to be hooked up for 35 hours. Maybe do it in shifts at night if you have a garage?

How do you know all this stuff Robert?

I have a BS EET and I read a lot :) I know that the Explorer uses a Vehicle Speed Sensor to determine the speed and odometer distance. Per my Haynes manual, the VSS produces a sine wave signal that is proportional to the speed of the vehicle. A sine wave can be produced by a frequency generator (that's what they do:)) So, by tapping into the two wires that come out of the VSS and introducing your own sine wave (of the proper amplitude, probably 0-5V) the computer shouldn't have any way of knowing if the sine wave is coming from an external source or from being driven down the road. Whether or not a frequency generator could be used or not though is only a theory though since I haven't had the need to alter my odometer. It wouldn't work if the odometer requires two different inputs though such as maybe your transmission turbine shaft speed in conjunction with the VSS speed. It should be easy enough to find out.

Robert for the correct mileage i swapped odometers :-) a lot easier, but my speedo is incorrect, and my engine temp light soars to the top and goes down a bit and soars up, should i pull both out and stick the engine temp in the middle and the speedo at 60 while driving alongside my dad at 60

That's an aweful lot of little screws to take out while you are driving! j/k I know you are being serious!! Good luck, anxious to see it installed!

Happy trailes!!

Those gauges look great. Personally, it seems like too much of a hassle. But good luck in getting everything right.

it looks good.. why if I had half a mind to do what I say I'm gonna do.. I'd get off my duff and do something like that.. but.. I'm lazy and have too many projects already lol

can't wait to see em installed man

No, like I suggested in my PM, I would try a temperature sender from an '01 and determine what percentage your speedometer is off and replace your speedometer gear with one that differs by the same percentage.
