Recently I have noticed decreased performance and also a 'chugging' while at idle...kinda feels similar to if you unplugged one of the spark plugs... it is really pissin me off! Also runs worse on the highway, and is hard to keep running when starting when warm. I have new plugs and wires, and cleaned my MAS when I put them in...I guess that was 2 or 3 months ago now...

Also- Not sure if this is related, but there is also a very strong gas smell after I get out of the truck...someone mentioned the something-or-other-purge solenoid...?

Thanks,

T

You could try this... Pull all the clips that hold the spark plug wires to the coil pack. Then with the engine running use a pair of rubber handle pliers and pull each plug out of the coil one at a time. Which ever plug doesnt effect the idle when u pull it off or put it back on is ur culprit. Also when ur doing this there should be a bolt of electricity jump the gap between the plug and the coil pack...if this doesnt happen then u know there is something wrong with either the coil pack, wiring, or plug. One last thing be careful. It will shock ya, but not too bad just enough to make ya jump and be scared of ur engine forever. :) This is one test that is fairly easy and could help you determine ur problem other then this there could be something wrong with ur fuel supply or compression or many of the sensors. Good luck!

Thanks fr the idea, I will try that tonight...but it seems less pronounced than it would be if that were the culprit....I sure hope it is not the Splitfire wires, of Bosch +4's, since those are both newer...that would be a bummer..

Starting when warm...ARGH!

Well, it seems that when I start my truck when warm, it chugs for about a minute...what is the deal?

I was having similar symptoms with my 92 Sport. I changed the O2 sensor, plugs and wires, fuel filter with no luck. The problem was the fuel pressure regulator. The diaghram ruptured causing fuel to enter the vacuum system. Fuel was fouling the plugs and giving an sluggish, chugging symptom similar to a timing or missing problem. The FPR is about $70 and not too difficult to change. I changed it in about 60 minutes...problem completely fixed.

I have had the same sluggish idle with my 94 Mazda Havajo/EXP Sport.
I have noticed a high pitched whistle when my RPMs are up around 5000. I will try the FPR, but does any one have any other ideas?
