was going to back out of my parking spot when i heard a little noise as if something got stuck and let loose...

now i have absolutely no reverse... i've looked at the posts about the reverse servo but i don't know....

could it possibly be just that? the o rings are done and need to get replaced? i'm hoping... will it hurt the car if i drive it? it drove like normal other than not having a reverse and now i have two neutrals :)

i do hear some swirling, wizzing, clunking, sound when i place in reverse though...

what are your thoughts.......

Is it a 4.0 or 5.0???

I'm thinking a problem with the low/reverse servo or band, simply because you say all the other ranges are okay. If it is the band or servo, you shouldn't have manual first either.

so if i were to check out the low/reverse servo or band myself (if even doable by a complete novice) i might have some luck? if not, will it hurt the car if i put in the new fluid and the gasket and everything? i know its a stupid question...

i saw the thread on the low reverse servo and it seems pretty doable... i just dont want to mess up anything else...

manual first? how would i test to see if that was gone? its an automatic 99 explorer 4.0 sohc... another dumb ? eh?

thanks for reading...

To check manual first, put the shifter into Low. Also, when in drive, you should be able to feel it going thru all the gears...

I just had a simmilar problem with my a4ld, couple clunks then no reverse, replaced by a light grinding sound and whirling sound. I shortly lost drive after reverse went and was concluded by a friend that the planetaries are probably blown up, soon to tell if that really is the problem.

Good luck, hopefully you have a simple problem. Im not too experienced with transmissions but id consider a clang bang pow a pretty bad thing...

lwrdrhvn,

Ford has a redesigned part for the low/reverse servo, but cannot remember what the part number is. Also check the valve body gasket as this is also famous for leaking on the 5R55E. I got the revised valve body gasket from Torrie at Ford Parts Network and it really made a difference. The Numbers for valve body are Valve Body Separator 1L5Z-7Z490-FA, and Valve Body Service Kit 3L5Z-7M203-JA.
