I was searching for quite some time about the wiring differences between the auto and manual 1354's on 1st gen Ex's. I finally came up with some info from kirby b. on what wires to cut and splice. I decided I didn't want to cut and splice wires if I didn't have to. Luckily I have the complete donor Ex here for the swap.

I removed the driver side seat, console and door rug trim. Both Ex's have power seats so also had to disconnect the 2 sets of wires (seat power and belt minder), to get the seat out. After doing the job I think it would have been easier to remove the passenger seat also but it is not absolutely necessary.

Once the rug was pulled back on both Ex's there was a very noticeable difference in wiring, obviously lol! On the manual it is 2 wires from the t-case thru the floor under the seat up to a plug below the ashtray but above the carpet line (very easy to locate). I removed that wire harness from the donor as it will be swapped directly into the other Ex.

The Ex with the auto has the same plug below the ashtray but is full of wires. Instead of going from the plug to the t-case the wires run all the way to the back to a control box located in the drivers side rear quarter panel. then wires run from there back to the t-case.

The swap is simple but time consuming.

Remove all wires and control box from vehicle. This will involve some extra work to get the wires and their plugs from the rear of the vehicle but is good to have harness in one piece with the box. Then take the wire harness from the manual and install like it was run in the donor (from plug under ashtray to the hole in the floor to the t-case).

Also involved in the swap was the push button delete/fake vent from the donor. Before I pulled the one off of the manual I thought I may have some problems with the wiring running for the auto. After I pulled the fake vent off I saw that the wiring was on the donor just the same as the auto. So things were simple remove and swap.

I was lucky when I did this I found missing and/or loosened seat bolts for the rear seat and seat belt. The previous owner was running wiring for subs and never put it back together properly. This also gave me the chance to clean the rug really well.

Comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Working on pics today
I already have the seat back in the 92 but the seat is out and the rug ended up getting cut out of the 93 so the pic will be easy to take. I will have to run some string to represent the manual wiring route.

got some pics now.

This one is of the wiring run under the drivers seat. The blue paint marker line is of where the manual wires go from the round hole in the floor to the connector under the dash. Also in the pic is the wires from the auto setup, I put that in place there so the mice didn't have easy access to the inside of my parts Ex.

Another pic of wiring locations. I also put blue paint marker on the Auto wiring to show the difference of where they are routed. As you can see the auto wiring runs along the cable tray to the back and the manual runs straight to the connector under the dash.

This is the auto wiring harness as you can see all of the slots are full of wires. At the top left of the pic is the ashtray, this should give you a good indication of the location of the harness.

This is the manual wiring harness, see only 2 wires! Still same location as the auto, just less wires.

This is from the Ex that came from the factory with manual shift 4WD. The wiring is in place for the push button controls but is just plugged into the back of the fake vent.

That looks very nice. Just last night I was wondering where to put the trans temp gauge.

Very *****in! Good info and a pretty easy swap, if you can find a good donor rig! Thanks Tuck!
