My '01 (4.10 LS) was getting horrible mileage, took more pressure on the accelerator than the '02 (3.73), and the transmission was staying in each gear too long - shifts were fine, just later than they should have been. My '02 gets 15-16 mpg in normal daily driving, mostly around town with a little bit of highway. Best of 20 mpg on the highway. The '01 got 12.3 on the last tank. Cleaned the MAF, left the battery unhooked for a half hour or so, and noticed an immediate difference! I could drive with minimal pressure on the gas, and shift points were where they should be. Just filled up - 15.3 mpg since cleaning the MAF! And that's all I did, and it didn't look that bad. The filaments weren't shiny, but didn't have a bunch of gunk on them. +3 mpg and noticeably better driving manners.
(Mileage figures based solely on odometer and gas pump, so not 100% accurate, but good for comparison. I'm very consistent in how I fill up, and both fill ups were at the same station. Not sure if it was the same pump.)
