I just got my 1998 Explorer (4.0L V6) back from the shop and as part of the inspection they did to fix a different problem, they said that the throttle body, intake (and so on down the line) have a lot of carbon build-up and it would cost about $100 (between time and materials) for them to clean it.

I searched here, but didn't find what I was looking for. Obviously I can clean the easily reachable stuff by hand, but what about the internal engine parts? Is this something that I can do myself by just using Sea Foam or some other additive in the fuel, or is this something that they have to do?

Thanks.
