is there a certain way to clean the electrical connections to/from the trans. I would like to rule out a bad connection before i replace the solenoid on my explorer
Use electrical contact cleaner spray. Tune up grease or any anti oxidant could be used to help prevent future corrosion due to moisture entering the connectors. They use this in light bulb sockets, spark plug wires, battery terminals, etc.

It's also referred to as dielectric silicone or grease. I use the stuff on all wiring connections, when you're dealing with computers and sensors any small amount of oxidation can cause issues with the PCM, this stuff will keep out moisture and keep a solid electrical connection
