Clicking/Clunking in front End

Hi guys new here.

And yes, I did use the search function about this problem and it was very helpful. Thanks!! My hubs are packed full of grease and need a good cleaning so that's what I'll do but I have another question.

I have a 93 Explorer 4X4 with auto locking hubs. On the front passenger side, when I remove the wheel, the hub with all the 4X4 components sits there nice and neat mounted on the rotor.

On the DRIVER'S side when I remove the wheel, I see somethig very different. The hub comes off with the wheel. So I see the locking cam mechanism and about half the "guts" of the 4X4 gears on the spindle and the rest of gears and such still in the hub attached to my WHEEL (not mounted in a nice neat unit on the rotor like the other side. Is this normal? Obviously, when I go to remount the wheel it wobbles pretty bad because I cant get it aligned properly. The truck makes a terrible thunking in that wheel when I try to engage 4X4.

So is this how they were made or did someone screw it up at some point?
 






The hub needs to be able to come off, and there isn't much that holds it on. From your description, I can't get a good picture of what "guts" are staying behind and what comes off with the hub. I would suggest you locate the "1st gen brake job diary" thread where they have some pictures as the hub comes off and see if your experience matches theirs.

The Clicking/Clunking sound is probably the hub. There is no difference between the drivers and passenger hubs. When you remove the hub all you should see is the spindle and nut which hold the bearings in place. A test you can run is to remove the driver and passenger hubs, do a short road test. If no click/clunk then hub/hubs are toast. Do not use dusty roads for obvious reasons.
