I have a 2003 XLT the truck was stuck in 4X4 H I pulled the fuses did the brown wire mod with no luck. I put the truck up on a set of ramps and pulled the transfer case solenoid motor and found (not surprisingly) that the transfer case was set to 4X4H . I manually reset the motor by putting the vehicle in neutral and put the transfer case into N. I buttoned everyting back up and went to back off the ramps. When I put the truck into reverse a fast clicking began. I put it back into park and tried again to put it into reverse - same fast clicking sound. I then put it in drive,3,2,1 and they engaged without the clicking.

Right now it is still on the ramps as i do not want to move it becuse I am not sure what will happen If i do - Any help or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

just guessing but it sounds like the 4wd didn't switch off yet. Not sure on yours but on my heep even when you switch gears its takes 2-10 seconds engage/dis-engage. The shift forks are spring loaded and it takes a few to sync up and do its thing.

Jr thanks for your reply. I was able to get the clicking to stop (also it would not go in reverse) by putting it in 4X4 low. I still have the problem of not being able to get the truck in 4X4 auto. I have determined it is an electronic issue with the transfer case motor or it is the dreded 4X4 Cm. I am trying to find a diagnostic to tell which one it is.
