Clockspring Replacement

Where do I purchase a new clockspring from? I called my local Autozone and they don't sell them. Ford will sell them for $106.

Here's a picture of the ripped one.

Does anyone know if it would be possible to carefully solder each wire back together?

Personally, I wouldn't try to weld the broken pieces back together. Solder might work though.

I am not sure that I would fool around to much with the area as the air bag activation goes thru there so if something happens, you might find your face a few inches back when your going down the highway. Having said that, you should probably understand why the spring ripped so that when / if you replace it, the same thing doesn't repeat itself.

Actually a common problem.

No I would not solder it at all. Either way I doubt it would work or be reliable.

It is a fairly easy swap too. I have done at least fifty by now.
 












I bought my four spoke type clock spring for about $15 at a local yard. Shop around, they should be common at any salvage yard. Good luck,

Did you have any trouble installing a used one? I've been looking around and read something about a tab that you remove once it's installed. And this tab centers the clockspring... or something like that. So, if this tab has already been removed, is it hard to get it centered?
 






I'm sorry, but that's on my list of items to do this coming week. I'm about to install my dash, I've left the old steering wheel on until then.

Do you use new parts or used? I'm trying to figure out if I'll have any trouble installing and centering a clockspring pulled of an old Explorer.

Also, does anyone know if a clockspring pulled from a 99 would fit?
 






I have dont 99% used but once I was swaping a steering column but not the bags.
If I recall correctly, the clock spring is five turns end to end so two and a half turns should be dead center. Some clock springs have that formula written on them. I am unsure if Ford is one of them.

95-97 same part number
98 has two different numbers. One for steering contorl one with out
99-01 another set of numbers same reasoning
