I got a 91 XLT 4.0 5 speed transmission

The problem im having is when i shift into gears 1,2,3,4,5 I get a clunking noise from under the truck when i shift up or down. can anyone tell me what this is or what to look for??

I currently have a parts truck that i can strip for parts if needed.

any info will help

I am no transmission expert, but it sounds like the U-joints are bad. Maybe someone else can confirm.

I'm with Darrman^ I also am not a trans expert but the u-joints would be a good start. They are resonable in price and not terribly difficult to replace. Chances are on a 91 they should be replaced anyway. May be Glacier the guru could chime in on this one and give you more advice.

The parts truck that i got has new U-joint on both ends
the truck is a 92 XLT 5 speed. Do you know what problens i would incounter just repalcing the hole shaft. Is there any difference from a 91-92 drive shaft?

hey while u have the driveshaft out (to replace the joints or whatever), do look into the pinion flange. move that around and see if theres any lateral play, cauz the pinion bearing would probably be the next thing id check after the u-joint.

Are the rear yokes the same, I think they had a couple different setups for connecting to the rear axle. Is yours 2 or 4 wheel? I have a Sport, so the 2dr driveshaft is different than yours, so I am not much help. The only problem would be getting the replacement shaft lined up exacty like the original, so it will be balanced.

With a MAnul trani you don't usually get the Clunk like you do with an Automatic. I'd be suspicious of the Trani Mount, that will clunk shifting a manual on all gears.

mounts

how do i check if the tansmission mounts are worn out

Slide under the car with a Floor jack or sizzor jack. Place the jackon the Trani just behind the Crossmember. Jack the tailshaft a little bit. You will see the rubber separating if it is NG. you don't have to and don't want to really crank up the trani with the jack, it wont take much before you will see it separate.

Mine does the same thing. My mechanic told me that it was my tranny brace, although that bit about the trany mounts themselves seems like somehting to look into. For now, I'm just learning to deal with the noise.

Trani Brace..he's probably saying the same thing.
Do it sooner rather then later..A bad Trani mount put stress on the 'u' joints and Motor mounts. Besides, the weather is only getting colder
