In the morning when I leave for work I will sometimes get a "clunk" when I first start backing up. It sounds like it comes from the front passenger side. It doesn't do it everyday just once in a while. I park on a driveway with a slight incline.

Any idea what it could be. My X is a '00 EB AWD.

Also not sure it it is the same problem but if I go over a sudden drop, like road contruction or coming off a curb, I also hear a clunk.

Thanks
Rich

might be bottoming out of the suspension or something rubbing... have the front suspension checked... CV, balljoints, rack, tierods, etc

Lotsa possibilities for a clunk. U joints and Radius Arm bushing immediately come to mind, but somhow from your decription I don't think it's the U joint necessarily.

2000's dont have radius arms, so it couldnt be that

Duh! I have to got to remind myself to look at the years! Thanks for pointing out a DUMBO mistake!

Could be the slip yoke on the driveshaft;
that's a simple easy job.
or front u-joints (if you have 4WD) as was said.

Or it could be something with the torsion bars up front; I know very little about the torsion bar setup on 2nd gens though.

Ok well I guess I'll just wait till the warmer weather and start taking passenger side apart till i find what is wrong.

Well it didn't do it for awhile but again today I heard it really well when backing up cause I had the window open.

It sounded like something was getting tight then it pops. Pretty loud noise.

I checked my bearings and the tie rod those seem fine.

How do I check if the CV is going out?
