Hello, i have an annoying problem, i have a 1999 xlt with around 100,000 miles on it. i just had the tranny rebuilt and i have an issue still here from prior to the rebuilt. when i accellerate from a stop, there seems to be a slight shudder, but the tranny shifts perfectly fine. The more annoying problem is when i come to a stop or suddenly release the gas, i hear a clunk which seems to be coming from the front or middle of the car. i have removed the driveshaft as to troubleshoot, but the problem is still there. i have also regreased the slip yoke and inspected the rear u-joints, im out of ideas, any suggestions, thanks in advance,
-Jim

It might be related to a delay of a servo releasing, and engaging a band or a solenoid locking, and unlocking. Did they replace anything electrical when they did the rebuild? Did they install a shift kit or use any Sonnax parts?

As he said... this was happening before the rebuild.

Can't help in regards to the problem however my fathers 2000 does the exact same thing and has been for about 3 years now with about 95k on it at that point. I've also started to head/feel the same on my 2003 with about 85k on it.

hey brooklynn i dont think they did anything electrical but im not sure, and im sure he did not use a shift kit, im thinking possibly a loose trans mount or t case bolt loose but what are the chances he didnt tighten it again after he took it out thanks.

This is probably not the issue, but something you should check is worn motor mounts. I had a 66 LTD that did the exact same thing you are describing regarding the clunking when you come to an abrupt stop or start quickly. Replaced the motor mounts and it cured the problem

grease the slip joint...?

You say you greased the slip joint, but did you check it for wear and play? If it gets sloppy, it will actually bind in the splines and will stick regardless of grease. Crawl under there and grab it and wiggle it up and down and see if it will move.

had same prob with my ranger

hello,
i had a 98 ranger with the same probelm. i cleaned and greased the slip joint going into the tranny, but that didn't help. i eneded up talking to a friend of mine at ford and he told me this was common with steel drive shafts. if you have a steel shaft i would recommend replacing it with an aluminum, that was the cure for mine:exp:
