Clunk when downshifting from 2nd to 1st

I have made numerous threads about this problem but finally since I had a warranty with the truck I thought I'd take a shot and just describe the problem I was having with the truck so I left it there and apparently its something with the tranny the work is being done at a trustworthy transmission shop and they said they're not cutting any corners and are just going to replace everything within the transmission housing with brand new parts. It maybe different for other people without warrantys for there trucks because he knows its only 100 out of my pocket but I'm if someone else is getting this problem just warning you of what is to come. You can drive on this clunk but over the past 9 months it has gotten progressively louder and more thump almost to the point of pushing the truck foward when coming to a stop and was getting me worried. Hope this helps someone with the problem knowing it is transmission related because I have gotten a lot of different answers as to a badly worn rear end or a worn slip yoke apparently it is transmission related.

If the "clunk" occurred consistently as the vehicle was slowing to a stop, it would be hard to imagine that it would not be transmission-related.

Sounds like just a messed up solenoid.

My 2004 XLT does the same thing...when slowing to exactly 20 mph, I experience a loud and forceful "clunk", to the point where it actually causes the vehicle to lurch forward. This problem occurred before and after rebuilding the transmission. Can anyone add to how it might involve the solenoid?

Mine does this too if I drive agressively. If I drive more conservatively, accelerating slower, coasting awhile before braking (when possible) and easy brake application the harsh downshift is not there. only when I am accelerating and braking more aggresivley does it start to happen. My friends "06 EB does the same thing. THey had it to te dealer several times and I am certain the Dealer said they could not find anything wrong.

yea mine still does it even after the rebuild lol its gotta be the transmission because I put it in third gear went up to 45-50mph and braked really hard and it never did it anytime. I'm gonna bring it back to the guy to get looked at eventually it seems like its having trouble downshifting or something

It has also been suggested that the dealer can re-flash the PCM and fix the problem. I've read where some have gone to dealers and were told there was no such update. Apparently there is and IIRC it costs approx $150. (However, this may be for a slipping issue between 2nd-3rd gear and not the kick)

Another thought thrown into this mix: During upshift from 2 to 3, Shift Solenoid 2 turns OFF, and Solenoid 3 turns ON.

That sequence is reversed during downshifting.

Now, if UPSHIFTS seem normal, at any throttle demand, those solenoids must be working properly; therefore, how could one of them be "bad" only on downshifts?

Just my 2 cents. FWIW. (proly nothing). imp
