I have an 04 Explorer, auto transmission. When I shift from P to R or D, I get a CLUNK from the rear. The same noise happens - some times, during normal driving and the truck shifts to the next lowest gear. Is it the U Joint? Thanks.

Could be that, but also look at your rear pinion bearing. 'Course, I don't KNOW that is what was wrong with mine, but I swapped out the rear axle, and the problem went away. Sounds like the same symptoms I had, though it would surprise me a little since yours is an '04.

Hi all , i have this same issue, it clunks when coming to a stop while downshifting, and when i let off the gas quickly, but when i shift through the gears manually it shifts perfectly fine, is there something in the auto tranny that could be causing this clunk since it doesnt do it when i shift manually? thanks in advance
