HELP! I have a 94 ford explorer xlt and latly I have been hearing (and feeling) a clunking noise whenever I slow down and break. I noticed it seems to only happen at short distences but when slowing from say 55 it does not do it. any thought as to what this may be????

I would check both brake calipers bolts to make sure neither of them have come loose or fallen out. i have seen this happen a few times with other fords after having the brakes serviced.hope this helps

Check radius arm bushings and the rest of the suspension (ball joints, shock mounts, etc.)

RA bushings have my vote! (Radius Arm bushings)

It's these puppies...

This picture is of my passenger side one. This is the bracket, but you can see the bushing down there in the bottom of the picture. There is one about right under the front part of the doors on both sides.

Clunking noise

Hello again everyone! Thanks for all the replies. Sorry I haven’t gotten back with anybody yet but I’ve been busy, Anyway.... I will check the bushings but I just recently had my parking brake on in my driveway. I forgot it was set and drove down the road a few feet till I noticed that "CLUNKING" noise when I hit the brake got ALOT louder! When I disengaged the parking brake it went back to the normal clunking sound. Same sound but was quieter. Could it still be the bushings???

That might cause me to pull the rear drums and see if something has broken or come loose inside the rear drums.

clunking noise

Well, I checked it out and you were right. the driverside rear parking brake has broken. I think it might still be semi engaged? I am going to my father-in-laws now to get some help. I will let you know. Thank you!!

Doonze

Wow no rust, I want to live in arizona where nothing rusts. My 92's frame is so rusty you cannot tell where the rivets are. The body is another automotive atrocity.:(

Hey, thank you for askin' the question I needed an answer to , I am not mechanicly inclined nor do I posess a degree in engineering , LOL. I am hearing the same noise and checked my radius arm bushings and I see some wear around the bracket.
Thank you for the education.

James
