Grinding sound when breaking

So heres my new problem ive got a 91 manual explorer that has started making a grinding sound when any pressure is applied to the brake. i cant explain the sound but its not metal on metal and kinda sounds like rocks grinding. It started immediately after i stopped suddenly to avoid another car. Any ideas?

I bet your front brakes are toast. That's what it sounds like when there is no pad left.
