I have a '96 Explorer that was just recently (within the last 3 months) inspected and had rear brakes replaced and rotors turned. In the last couple of weeks I've noticed that when I start from a complete stop any faster than just a slow roll, i.e. I hit the gas when starting, I get a soft "clunk" that feels like it comes from somewhere underneath in the middle of the car. Also, when I'm stopping and I get to a slow roll, i.e. the last few seconds before a complete stop, I notice a gentle "clunk, clunk" that seems to be very rhythmic. It doesn't happen all the time and it doesn't seem to be affecting driveability, but I'm curious what might be causing this. The inspection was normal and the mechanic said everything looked good for an X with 108,000 miles and the new brake pads seem to be working fine as well...I almost wonder if it's a Ford issue in general, my brother has a Ford Focus and his car is making the exact same noises right now. Any ideas???

Sounds like you may need to lube the slipyoke on your rear driveshft.

I think it's your rocker arm bushings. Had mine done and that fixed the same problem/noise.
