Clunking sound while driving.

I have the same thing happening to my 96 explorer. driving on flat level roads, at random intervals it clunks and the whole truck shudders. I thought it was the front axle so I removed the front drive shaft and it stopped. Altho since the I have been told by 2 different mechanics, different things may need to be replaced. Mechanic 1) said the electric motor on the transfer case (85 bucks) Mechanic 2) says he worked on one and changed the sensors behind the calipers and that solved it (55 bucks each). Can anyone please help me on the probabilities of either one of these items being the issue?

Thanks in advance.

Well revenge8 I replaced those components as well and still had the problem. Found out what the problem was. I bought a Ford Explorer. Probably the biggest pile that Ford ever created. My advice get rid of it and by a Jeep Commander Limited with a Hemi like I did.

magnectic sensors?

my uncle has a 1998 4wd explorer with and automatic trans, we had to replace the shift motor but the new one didnt have the sensors, so the parts store let me clip wires as they wouldnt let me use one of their knives to remove pins..... so my problem is i was too eager to fix it so i didnt note the placement of wires....... any photos of the clip with the sensors attached? please help...... or do i need them connected at all, he doesnt want it to shift out of 2 wheel high so do they matter now?
