Roaring sound while driving

I went for a ride in a friend's 2000 Explorer ( SOHC, automation, 3.73 LS ) and hear what she was complaining about - a rather noticeable "roaring sound" while driving. Putting it in N made no difference.

From just riding, I cannot tell where the sound is coming from. I have yet to get under it or actually look at anything.

Any ideas?????

Wheel bearings could be the problem. My buddy's '97 Sport was doing the same thing and the front wheel bearings were the culprit. They weren't exhibiting much play, but they sure were noisy.

Another culprit could be the tires. Depending upon the alignment and type of tire, they can make a lot of noise when they cup and wear...

The tires appear to be in excellent condition.

I too initially suspect wheel bearings as a possible cause. I am gonna take a look later this week.

even after I replaced my front bearings, and got 4 new tires I still get this roaring when breaking. I'm planning on replacing my TREs and ball joints to see if it helps.

I had a loud roaring noise in my 95 expl. turned out to be the pinion gear bearing inside the rearend was bad.

I suspect that this is the same noise that I have been hearing in my explorer. I tried to discuss it in this thread: Thread But I didn't know what to call it.

Mine does this a couple times a week. Flipping on the 4x4 does nothing... thats what the ford dealer told me to try the next time it happens.

Can the bearings and seals be replaced or do you have to buy the whole hub assembly?? If you can do just the bearings and seals where is the how to on this site. I have searched but just cant seem to find it.

You have to buy the whole assembly. The bearings and seals in 95+ Explorers are sealed units. They are not servicable...

Jeff, thats only on 4wd trucks. I have serviced my '99 2wd several times.

Only when hot....moving?? Coming from........engine compartment??

Reason I ask cause the, "roar" could be the fan noise?? Like in bad fan clutch/or plastic fan broken?? Perhaps??

Problem Determined

Bad right front tire. Cupped to beat the band. Toe and camber way out of specs.

Problem Resolved

New tire, ballance and front end alignment.
