Have a '99 XLT 4dr 4x4 w/ 4.0 SOHC V6. 76,000 miles. The past few days when going over bumpy side streets the suspension, (seems to be the front and back), is making clunking and squeaky sounds. I've owned the vehicle for 4.5 years and have never heard these sounds before.

The sounds do not occur when on smooth surfaces like highways. I'm wondering if I need to have struts, shocks, ball joints, etc. replaced.

Thanks for your feedback.

my front end squek was from my lower ball joints, they needed to be replaced. before i shipped my mounty i had them replaced at my mechanic and it doesnt squek anymore. As for your rear i have no clue but im gonna specualte.it possibly could be your bushings.

Im having the same problem, accept its so cold that I didn't have the windows down and it almost sounded like it was coming from the steering column. But today at the drive thru I noticed that its quit loud/annoying coming from the front left wheel(from what I could tell). Is there any way to tell if it is the lower ball joints.

My truck squeaks and groans over speed bumps.....mainly when it's below 32. When it is warmer it is hardly noticeable. Ball joints checked out ok.......so I figure its just really cold bushings and suspension parts.

ya lol drive thru is where its so bad, embarassing. Mine was the right lower ball joint, yours maybe the left. When you turn your steering wheel, while stationary does it make the noise still, if it is then like mine it was the lower ball joint, but it may bhe the upper for you, theres no way for me to tell which unless your under the truck and have someone move it.

Going over seed bumps, I get a sqeaky sound (front passenger side). This is only in dry weather though. The dealer told me not to worry, most X's do this, problem with the bushings. Once or twice a year (in warmer weather) I have them sprayed with some silicone. It lasts for about a month.
