1991 explorer sport
Hey guys, I need some help and advice with my 91 explorer sport. It has never done this before and it has been going on for at least a month now and I cannot figure out what it is. It is a manual transmission an when I give it gas the RPM's shoot up to 3 or 3500 rpm and delay for at least 3 seconds before it will take off like normal. It is a very similar experience to driving an automatic car and suddenly stomping the gas peddle then the car takes of after 2 or 3 seconds, in fact that is exactly what happens with my explorer but it is when I give it any gas while in any gear. I have too toe the petal to look or sound normal or else my exhaust (while does sound great) goes extremely loud with the high rev's constantly and my mpg continues to decline. I love my explorer it is my first and only vehicle and one reason I have always loved it is because whenever I have needed to really get up and go I can whether on the interstate or in a mud-hole or trail it has. I have lost that ability and do not know how to correct this problem. So please if anybody has anything that could tell me how to fix it then feel free to. Thanks

Sounds like your clutch is slipping and needs to be replaced.

Ditto. If the rpms raise & you go no where, that's almost always a clutch going.

Yup, you need a clutch and probably a flywheel too now from the slipping.

I would get a complete kit with the disc, throwout bearing, slave cylinder and a flywheel, or at least the pilot bearing. Most likely your flywheel will be blued and warped from the heat. Some machine shops can turn them flat, but most times they are junk once blued.

Search here there are plenty of threads about doing the job and will give you idea of what you are getting into. If your truck is 2WD, then its pretty straight forward, if 4x4 then its a little more difficult but not too bad.:D

And buy a Ford slave cylinder. Spend the extra $. They tend to work the best & don't have issues at 10-20K miles after install forcing you to take everything apart again. A lot of aftermarket slave cylinders have a track record of being a problem on this application for some reason.
