Cobras and Pricing

I was checking around for the best prices on Cobras, and found www.buyfordmotorsport.com They have '98 Cobra rims (17x8) for $109 ea. and '95 (17x9 $149 ea. 17x 8 $159 ea.) Anbody know the difference between the 95s and 98s? They looked the same on the website. Also, anybody know why the '95 17x8s would be cheaper than the wider '95 17x9s?

well u would think wider = more material.. therefore more $$$

sorry, meant to ask why the narrower 17x8s ($159 ea) would be more expensive than wider 17x9s ($149 ea) But youre reasoning for that other question makes perfect sense, thats why i question the above pricing...

gefracing.com has very close prices, including the '03 cobra wheels for only $149 a piece.

I also noticed you are located in Georgia, so is gefracing.com so you wouldn't have to pay for shipping.

Thanks for the recommendation....didnt realize gefracing was in georgia.
I looked around at some pictures of Cobras and the 98s looked a little more "curvy" or something...can anyone else see this?

The 98's are very close to the 95's but I think the spokes do have a little more curve to them. I think the 03's look the best, but I couldn't get mine to fit after I bought them, I didn't want to use spacers.

The 98's do have more of a curve to them. I think they look better than the 95's on mustangs but not on explorers. I have the 95's and I got them from gefracing. As for the 17x8 95's, those would have to be replicas because they didnt make them in that size. Not sure why they cost more if they arent real.

the "98's" youre talking about are 98 cobra rims (17x8.)

the "95's" youre talking about are 95 cobra r rims (17x9.)

yes theyre different.

I knew what year cobra mustang they were from respectively, thanks. What i was really wondering was addressed by 98ford, about why the 95 17x8s would be more expensive than 95 17x9s. I'll check the search again.

im not sure on that one. i would assume that since theres prolly less of a demand for the 98 cobras, theyd be more expensive; everyone and their mother has/wants the 95 cobra r's. prolly just a case of supply and demand.

Hey i never see anyone running 18x9 are these possible. why does everyone get 17x9 do they fit better or something.

17x9's are the only size the '95 Cobra R's come in... if you want authentic wheels. Most of the people here have the '95's.

The cost differential is most probably a function of economies of scale. More '95 rims on the street than '98s. The tooling investment on the 95s has been paid off for quite some time vs. the '98s

but why are the narrower '95 17x8s more expensive than the authentic sized, '95 17x9s?

Ok guys-need your support here....
The time has finally come for our Michelin LTXs to be replaced....and i am currently trying to convince the parents to get the Cobras with 275/55 R17s, and I am meeting stubborn resistance... (haha). I have tried the usual: looks better, performs better, better wet/dry traction, etc. But the Goodyear man dealt a detrimental blow to my efforts. And i quote the goodyear professionals "with larger wheels and low profile tires, you run the risk and hitting a pothole and damaging the tire, possibly even cracking the wheel, leading to an expensive replacement of both"
Well, that went over well with the parental forces...Well, I dont consider 17s to be extreme (rather conservate in fact) and do not consider 55 series tires to be excessively low profile... So guys, the point of all this rambling is the hope that you guys could post just a few short comments on the ride quality, etc with cobras to try to provide some evidence to support my claims that the X will be a much better vehicle for the change. Thanks for your time guys, it is truly appreciated. (ahh, the trials and tribulations of a teenager living at home)

Okay, first of all, everything that guy at Goodyear told you is complete bull****!!! They told me the same thing when I asked them about 20's, but I got smart and asked some of the guys on here, and I bought the 20's and I love them!! 17's with a 275-55 size tire have plenty of protection from damaging your wheels, trust me. I would really consider going to another shop instead, I really do HATE Goodyear, and everybody knows why. He is just another one of those people that doesn't believe anything should be changed from its stock form. You will be fine with that wheel and tire setup, but its the spacers and rubbing that will be your only concern. Let us know what you decide!


edit: I also wanted to add... that size tire is NOT low profile, like the Goodyear "professional" (haha) said. And it is a common tire size too, the Mercedes ML 430 SUV comes stock with that tire size.

First of all... Goodyears SUCK! I have a set on my stock wheels that I recently put back on for the winter and I cant wait to put my cobras with the pirellis back on. Traction is terrible, handling sucks, my abs kicks when stopping on wet roads sometimes (never happened with the pirellis). Do not get goodyears. 17's are not big. A 55 series tire is small but not when the width is 275. All you have to do is measure 1" away from your wheel now and that is how much sidewall you will have with 17's. Good luck with the parents.
