Hello,

My truck is throwing CEL, checked codes and it’s a 123
TPS voltage high

Symptoms I am having:
Stumble upon acceleration from a stop
Descreased preformance overall
While driving usually uphill, the truck will stop accelerating regardless of pedal input. It feels like there is a “sweet spot” for lack of a better term.

CEL does not come on right away it usually takes about 20 minutes. It sometimes goes off but is usually on.
I think the truck had this issue all along, but there were other codes relating to my cracked head/running hot issues.

I tested the TPS with a meter and got pretty close readings but replaced the TPS anyways with no change.

I’m guessing that the wiring or connector is messed up?
Has anyone else had this issue? I did read one guy that said he hooked a jumper from neg batt terminal to a throttle body bolt, but he never came back to say if it worked or not.

I might try that if I can’t find anything wrong with the wiring.

Thanks for any help

Did you set the TPS to the correct position upon re-installation?

Setting the base voltage is important.

I tested the old TPS circuit last night
Closed throttle = .98v
WOT = 4.7v
It moved smoothly or so I thought. I’ll run the test again tomorrow.

I didn’t “set” anything when I installed the new one, should I have?
Doesn’t the TPS only turn in one direction? I installed it so that it would turn in the correct manner. I’ll retest and see what I can find.
I have a hunch it’s in the wiring.

Thanks for the speedy response

TPS is actually a variable resistor.

Removed from the throttle body resistance between center terminal and one terminal goes up while the other goes down.

It should only rotate in one direction.

Good idea about checking the wiring. Corrosion or a bad connection can do strange things in electronics.

Cleaned the throttle body and code 123 is not showing up but it is still showing the symptoms- dead spot no accelation at times. Like right off idle and WOT
Stumbles like a vacuum leak, sprayed brake clean around the vacuum hoses and ports and the idle did not change at all.

Could be IAC I guess going to check that now

It idles better with IAC unplugged then when plugged back in it stumbles and idled crappy.
Not sure what that means

Getting better at deciphering the flashes, and which category.

Code 123 seems to be gone, cleaning the throttle body seemed to make it go away.
I’ll start a new thread for my other codes

Thanks

If it idles bad with IAC connected it could mean IAC is sticking.

Since you said this:

dead spot no accelation at times. Like right off idle and WOT

It falls inline.

IAC is there to control idle only. Once the throttle is opened it should close off.

IAC is built like a water faucet valve. Driven by something called a stepper motor. Little steps at a time either forward or backward as required by the PCM.

You could try cleaning it but as a per cost basis it's easier to get one from Rock Auto.

Once its off clean the passage too.

IAC is self calibrating. Basically once you turn the key on it finds "Home Position" and waits for it's next command.

Don't forget to check the intake pipe for leaks. It rubs on the fan shroud and the rubber ends go bad.

Thanks

I’m going to prob replace some gaskets and IAC and then bring it somewhere with a smoke machine if that doesn’t fix it.
Been working on this truck for a month replacing heads and other parts and I just need it running right or sell it

Replaced fuel filter and cleaned MAF. MAF was pretty gross. Filter seemed fine I blew right through it.
I could tell just by the way it started that it was better. Gave it gas and it didn’t stumble.
Took her for a ride, throttle response way better no more stumbling when accelerating from a stop. No more dead spot in gas pedal at WOT she steadily accelerates without issue. Took out on hgwy and up some hills where it would give me problems before, no problems now,
CEL stayed off the whole time and it seems like gas mileage is better too.
I am pretty happy to have the truck running nice again.

Thanks for all the help!

I think what happened was I knew something was up with the coolant and it used to throw a coolant temp sensor code. I drove the truck like that for quite a while before I was able to get the heads and make the time to do install the new heads.

I guess the CEL was probably for more than just the coolant temp haha

I definitely will. It’s only right to return the favor
