Driving around town last night, the engine felt like it was bogged down at a stop light e.g., no acceleration away from the light. The check engine flashed several times and remained on. The rest of the drive home was uneventful save for the still lit up check engine light.
This morning the Exploder started and ran fine all the way to the dealer. They ran the scanner and came up with code 305 which is a #5 cylinder misfire. It wasn't misfiring at the time but the computer picked up and remembered the problem from the night before.
They kept it for the day, reset the computer and drove 16 miles without once experiencing any of the problems I did. I shouldn't have been surprised. $70 later, all they could tell me was that it was an isolated event and everything checked out normal.
The service advisor thought that perhaps my aftermarket plugs and wires (Bosch +4 and Magnacor) might be the problem but I doubt it. The plugs and wires have 45K on them. She said that even Ford plugs don't last much longer than 50K even though Ford says they do.
Is this misfiring a sign of troubled waters ahead?
