Code P0340 on a 98X

Wif was driving home from her class and got a CEL. Took it to Auto Zone and they pulled the code P0340. Cam Position sensor malfunction.

Now I have a Haynes that states that the CPS is on the back of the block and it gives a nice picture as to where on a V8(front of the block) so if any of y'all have changed a CPS on a 98 (non SOHC or also known as the EFI) and you could give me either pics or a good method to tracking the Cam Position Sensor down it would be greatly appreciated.

Finally any danger to driving it with the CPS out? the X goes about 90 M round trip daily and I worry about the Wif gettin stranded.

I can take a picture tomarrow at work to show you. I am also gonna tell you, its pretty easy to find. The CMP for code PO340 is located on the driver side Valve Cover near the front of the cover. You can't miss it, it is the only sensor that bolts down on top of the valve cover that once removed you can see inside the engine. It is impossible to miss on a SOHC. If you still need pic let me know and I will post it tomarrow I have my digital camera in my side locker at work.;)
 






It is not a SOHC it is an EFI (X in the VIN) so the sensor is in the rear of the block and that is why I could use a pic.


Question- is it safe to drive?
 






Panther, the CMP is located on the very top of what used to be the distributor drive, at the back of the engine, right next to the firewall. Two capscrews hold it on, and there is one electrical connector. It's very easy to change, just don't remove the drive assembly (if you do, it will have to be re-timed).

It won't harm the engine to drive it like that for a short while (your mpg will suffer though), but since its so easy to change, I would do it ASAP.
 






If someone that knows where it is could post a pic that would be great!!!. I have looked and looked but can't find anything that resembles what I have been told to look for.

Well I pulled this out of a Ford EVTM at my job, cam sensor is at the back of the engine, I hadn't taken a pic because I thought (didn't pay attention to the EFI part just seen SOHC in the () so assumed it was a SOHC) it would be easy for you to spot on a SOHC. Anyways here is a printed picture, that's what we use at work to find sensors on new cars, tomarrow I will pass by my dealer to get some tools out of my box, I'll take a pic and post it tomarrow no doubts. A real live picture! For now here is the evtm picture.

Panther, I don't know if you've already replaced the CMP. If not, you can access it by first removing the coil pack, and moving the PCM wiring harness out of the way. Then use a midgit socket and swivel to remove the sensor.
