Hello;
Today I pulled into a gas station had the usual state inspection.
I did not know my 1999 Mounty was going to need the emissions checked.
I'm driving around now with a "Rejection" sticker as a result of a code P0442. I have been told code P0442 is one of three (1) Gas Cap, (2) Vaccum leak or (3) Purge valve.
Some mechanics know of various things failing on vehicles most of the time making the problem common.
Do you have any knowledge of what the most common would be of a emissions code P0442?
I am hoping it is not a purge valve. I have heard it is located somewhere around the wheel wells both front and rear, a canister or something?
I took a peek on my Ford Lincoln Mercury repair DVD but for some reason I am having a difficult time figuring out it's location. Looking at the sketches, I don't have a clue.
When the Mounty is running I can smell a fuel odor near the passengers side rear, similar to a too rich fuel mixture odor. The exhaust pipe is right in this area.
180750 miles on it with a 5.0L (302 cu. in.)
Any information will be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Rick
